Spinal Column

Types of Spinal Cord Damage
Nerves are made up of delicate, specialized cells called neurons. Some neurons can extend several feet long in order to make the connections necessary to direct movement and gather sensory information. One of the most important bundles of nerves is the spinal cord, which is encased in the protective covering of your backbone. Sadly, though, sometimes your spinal column is not enough to protect your nerves from serious damage.
The nerves of the spinal cord are the second tier of neurons after the ones in the brain. The spinal cord carries instructions from the brain to the rest of the body, and it also gathers sensory information from your body to relay Back to the brain. If the spinal cord suffers from injury, both of these functions can be disrupted.
There are several ways in which the nerves of your spinal cord can be injured, including:
- Concussions. These occur when the spinal column suffers a serious jolt or jarring motion which stuns the nerves. Spinal cord concussions are usually temporary, and you can regain motion and feeling as your inflamed tissue heals.
- Contusions. When your spinal column is hit or smashed, it can tear blood vessels inside the spinal cord. As the bruise builds, it can place dangerous amounts of pressure on the nerves. If this pressure is left untreated, it can cause permanent damage.
- Compression. Compression, like contusions, is hazardous due to the pressure it places on the nerves. However, this pressure is not from blood, but rather things like herniated discs and even foreign objects that can become lodged in the backbone.
- Tears. Tears are minor separation of the nerves that do not result in a complete loss of motion or senses.
- Cut. A cut occurs when your spinal cord is completely severed.
Sadly, spinal cord injuries can permanently rob you of your ability to move and sense things like touch and temperature. One common source of spinal cord injuries are car accidents. If you have been hurt in a car accident caused by another person’s negligence, you may be entitled to financial compensation to help you with your pain and suffering.
